The ASEAN Federation of Plastic Industries (AFPI) serves as a regional consortium comprising plastic industrial associations from ASEAN member nations. Currently, AFPI boasts a membership roster of seven countries, namely Indonesia, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam. Collectively, these member nations represent a combined total exceeding 3,000 plastic companies.
Established on December 5, 1981, AFPI enjoys official recognition from the ASEAN Chambers of Commerce and Industry. It operates as the singular private sector entity within the Working Group on Trade & Industrial Co-operation, tasked with representing the interests of the plastic industry.
Dedicated to fostering an ethos of "Unity & Friendship," AFPI is committed to advancing economic cooperation and harmonization within the ASEAN region in the realm of plastic manufacturing. Furthermore, it is resolute in its mission to develop, initiate, and execute plans, programs, and projects aimed at enhancing the growth of intra-ASEAN plastic industries and trade.
Established in 1991, the Asia Plastics Forum (APF) is presently composed of 12 member nations, including Bangladesh, China, India, Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Thailand, and Vietnam. APF was founded with the primary objective of facilitating the exchange and dissemination of information pertaining to the plastics industry and economic matters within the Asian region. Its core mission is to collaboratively seek solutions to shared challenges and cultivate robust business partnerships among plastic processors in Asia.
In the past few years, APF has been focusing towards addressing critical sustainability issues confronting the plastics sector. Notably, the organization has prioritized initiatives centered around waste management and the mitigation of marine litter concerns.
Established in 2011 during the 5th International Marine Debris Conference, the Global Plastics Alliance (GPA) has since expanded to encompass 75 prominent plastics organizations and allied industry associations across 40 countries worldwide. These entities, acting as voluntary signatories of "The Declaration of the Global Plastics Associations for Solutions on Marine Litter," collectively operate under the umbrella of the GPA. They diligently undertake local and regional projects aimed at tackling the pressing issue of marine debris.
The GPA's commitment to contributing to sustainable solutions is channeled through six key areas of focus outlined in the Declaration, which encompass education, research, public policy, the exchange of best practices, plastics recycling and recovery, and the containment of plastic pellets.
The GPA convenes on an annual basis, and it issues a comprehensive progress report biennially to transparently share its accomplishments and developments. The Operation Clean Sweep program (OCS) is a global initiative with a singular focus on the comprehensive reduction of pellet loss throughout the entirety of the plastics value chain. This endeavor encompasses a wide spectrum of stakeholders, including resin producers, transporters, bulk terminal operators, and plastics processors. PPIA stands as an original signatory and holds a license for OCS.
Operation Clean Sweep (OCS) aspires to empower operations managers within the plastics industry to proactively curtail the inadvertent escape of pellets, flakes, and powder from processing facilities into the environment. On a global scale, the mitigation of pellet, flake, and powder loss has been formally incorporated into the "Declaration of Solutions for Marine Litter." This strategic inclusion underscores the plastics industry's dedication to fulfilling its role in addressing the pressing issue of marine litter.
