The Philippine Plastics Industry Association, Inc. (PPIA) is the premier voice of the local downstream plastics industry. The association was formed on January 18, 1970, with an initial membership of eighty (80) plastic companies. On September 6, 1970, it was officially inaugurated and now houses its office in a building located at 122 A. Del Mundo Street, between 10th and 11th Avenues, Grace Park, Caloocan City, Metro Manila.
Today, the PPIA has a total membership of 160 downstream manufacturing companies in the Philippines, with 44 advisers who are providers of raw materials and technology to the industry.
The PPIA began as an organization dedicated to promoting cooperation and mutual understanding among the local plastic product manufacturers. At present, it carries a reputation for upholding the downstream plastic industry’s interests in key policies and legislation, particularly on customs and tariff rules, environmental laws and regulations, power and energy issues, labor concerns, and product standards, among others. The PPIA is actively involved in addressing environmental issues and pursuing scientific and fact-based policies on issues affecting the health of the industry, its products, and the environment.
In May 2003, the association aligned itself with the other industry groups called the Multisectoral Environment Committee. The group advocates for a uniform information and education campaign (IEC), particularly on proper solid waste management and segregation for recovery and recycling of post-consumer plastic wastes, pursuant to the mandate and implementation of Republic Act 9003, otherwise known as the Ecological Solid Waste Management of the Philippines of 2000.
Moreover, the group provided technical and scientific inputs in addressing and articulating environmental concerns and in the development of the Life Cycle Analysis (LCA) of plastic products and packaging, pursuant to Sec. 29 of R.A. 9003 or the NEAP. The members of the group have likewise extended their technical expertise on product development and testing standards for plastic products and raw materials.
The PPIA maintains its active participations, affiliations and memberships with the local key umbrella organizations of the country such as the: Philippine Chamber of Commerce and Industry (PCCI), Federation of Filipino Chinese Chamber of Commerce and Industry Inc. (FFCCCII), Federation of the Philippine Industries (FPI), Exporters Confederation of the Philippines (PhilExport), Employers Confederation of the Philippines (ECOP), Samahan sa Pilipinas ng mga Industriyang Kimika (SPIK), Philippine Employers and Labor Social Partnership, Inc. (PELSPI) for key industry concerns, and with the Solid Waste Management Association of the Philippines (SWAPP), National Recyclers Organization of the Philippines (NROP), other socio-civic organizations and religious groups in advocating for the effective implementation of R.A. 9003.
At the international level, the PPIA has been the country’s representative to the ASEAN Federation of Plastic Industries (AFPI) since 1981 and has upheld the AFPI chairmanship in 1996–1997 (6th term), in 2007–2010 (12th term), and currently holds the Chairmanship of the 19th Term AFPI.
The association is also a member of the Asian Plastics Forum (APF), a regional group formed to discuss and address environmental issues in plastics. As part of AFPI, PPIA is also a member of the Global Plastics Alliance (GPA), which is composed of 75 plastics organizations and allied industry associations in 40 countries worldwide. As voluntary signatories to the Declaration of the Global Plastics Associations for Solutions to Marine Litter, GPA members execute projects locally and regionally to address the issue of marine debris.
